Organization and schedule of the M2

The program comprises courses and a Master Thesis ("mémoire").

Courses are scheduled on 4 periods, each one of 6 weeks, in the following way

For most courses, grades depend on a written exam. For advanced courses, grades may be awarded on the basis of an oral exam, a presentation, or a mini-memoire.

Courses (36 ECTS)

Students must get 4x9=36 ECTS via courses, with at most 18 ECTS coming from introductory courses and at least 9 ECTS coming from advanced courses ("fondamentaux 2" or "spécialisés"), with application of the semestrialization rule. It is also possible to take courses from other M2 or universities (LMFI, Orsay...) upon acceptance by the directors of the M2.

Semestrialization

The semester S3 will be validated with 3 courses among introductifs, fonda 1 et fonda 2 + the optionnal course of 3 ECTS (total : 30 ECTS) and the semester S4 will be validated with 1 course among fonda2 and spécialisés + the stage. Therefore it is not possible to validate more than one cours spécialisé.

Compensation

The compensation between the semesters S3 et S4 is possible at the choice of the stutend.

Master Thesis (21 ECTS)

This is a dissertation on a contemporary research article or subject, accompanied by an oral defense.

Students are advised to prospect a potential supervisor as soon as they have a precise idea of their own interests. In any case, they should have made their choice by the end of March.

The date of the defense is fixed jointly with the supervisor.

The students who plan to apply to a Contrat Doctoral from our Ecole Doctorale should have completed the M2 by the end of June or mid-July (at least the stage should be advanced enough so that the advisor can give his opinion on the potential PhD Thesis before mid-june). For all the others, the deadline for defense is end of September.

The 3 last ECTS

It is possible to follow a language course, or a physic/computer science course, etc. It is also possible to follow a course in another M2 in non-fundamental mathematics (typically the M2 LMFI or the Applied Math M2 of LJLL). It is also possible to validate the participation to a conference or a working group, or regular attendance to a seminar, if the student write a summary of the attended talks in Latex.

The student will transmit the information about the option he chooses to the secretary of his M2.

Télé-enseignement

Some courses can be followed at distance. The student download the lecture notes from the professor's website and keep in touch with him by email. However the exams take place in the University.
